SPARTA, Mich.—  A celebration of West Michigan's agricultural Mecca returns to Sparta this weekend.

Harvest on the Ridge festival will unfold at Rogers Park Sept. 20. This year’s event includes a couch racing fundraiser, the Dirty Apple Obstacle Run, a cupcake baking contest, an apple pie eating contest, hay rides, corn mazes, kids’ activities and a farmers’ market.  Johnny Appleseed is kicking off the event with donkey rides and his tale of how  “The Ridge” became filled with apple orchards.

SPARTA, Mich.—Johnny Appleseed is on his way to Sparta to share his story of how “The Ridge” became filled with apple orchards.

Johnny will bring his trusted donkey, Levi for rides while entertaining children with his story and song.    His tale helps kick off this year’s Harvest on the Ridge festival in Sparta on Sept. 20.  This year’s event will include a couch racing fundraiser, the Dirty Apple Obstacle Run, a cupcake baking contest, an apple pie eating contest, hay rides, corn mazes, kids’ activities and a farmers’ market, all located in Rogers Park.

GRANDVILLE, Mich.—The back-to-school shopping season is here, and Macy’s is giving customers a charitable reason to open up their wallets.

The department store is holding its ninth annual “Shop For A Cause” event on Saturday, Aug. 23.  Customers who purchase a $5 shopping pass at any of Mel Trotter Ministries four thrift store locations can enjoy special discounts, entertainment and http://www.meltrotter.org exclusive events at the Macy’s in Grandville.  All proceeds from the pass sale will go to Mel Trotter.

My Town Sparta: Strawberry U-pick season arrives

SPARTA, Mich.—Strawberry picking season has arrived at Fruit Ridge Farm Market.

The market began offering u-pick strawberries Monday, June 16.  Each quart filled will cost $3.50; each flat (eight quarts) filled is $24. 

Fruit Ridge Farm Market has picking containers, but each customer should bring their own containers to take home the fruit.   For more information, visit the market website here.

Fruit Ridge Farm Market is located at 9000 Fruit Ridge Ave. in Sparta.  Business hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

My Town Sparta: Pharmacy grand re-opening celebration scheduled

SPARTA, Mich.--- A longtime business will celebrate the opening of its new location with free food and activities later this month.

Momber Hometown Pharmacy moved from its rental space at 133 E. Division Street to a new, permanent home at the corner of Division and South State Street in February.  The new pharmacy has a drive-through and updated security, but is smaller than the old site, so items in the retail area are constantly changing

The pharmacy will celebrate its grand re-opening Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can enjoy free popcorn and slushies,  a bounce house, giveaways and sales.

My Town: Outdoor Farmer's Market to feature more than 50 vendors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Outdoor Farmer’s Market in downtown Grand Rapids will open for its second season this weekend.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market says the new season of outdoor shopping will start Saturday May 3.  The outdoor market will be open every Saturday in May, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The market will host its inaugural “Chefs at The Market” demonstration at 10 a.m.  A chef will showcase simple recipes you can follow using food available at the market.  This weekend’s demonstration will feature rhubarb.

Inside the market, visitors can take part in a free yoga session and enjoy live jazz music by Hugh DeWitt.  At noon, shoppers can also enjoy microgreens grown in the market’s greenhouse as part of a $5 tasting bar.
