Arctic winter weather delays Relay For Life kickoffs

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—The winter weather is putting a kink in kicking off many Relay For Life campaigns.

The Caledonia Relay for Life kickoff event scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28 has been canceled. Organizers of Sparta’s Relay For Life have also rescheduled their kickoff event to Feb. 4.

Hundreds of other organizations, businesses and schools have also posted cancelations, which you can find on the WZZM 13 homepage here.

Sparta offering Adult Education classes in four locations

Sparta Adult Education is offering classes in GED (General Education Development), ESL, (English as a second language) and ABE (Adult Basic Education) with classes being offered at four locations.

Open House and Registration is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22nd from 4-7pm at Sparta Middle School, 480 S. State St. in Sparta or at York Creek Community Center, 3999 Alpenhorn, Comstock Park from 5:30-8:30pm. Classes begin on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Class locations are located at:

Sparta Middle School, Peach Lutheran Church in Sparta, York Creek Community Center and Saints Peter & Paul Church in Grand Rapids.

New community center opens to the public Jan. 18

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—  A new community center will officially open to the public this Saturday, Jan. 18.

The York Creek Community Center is located at 3999 Alpenhorn Dr. NW.  The center services as a meeting place where local organizations can provide a variety of classes, programs and community events, free of charge.

The new facility features meeting rooms, a common area, a kitchen and a computer room equipped with 10 computers. The center is provided by York Creek Apartments but all classes and programs are run by partner organizations, including:

'Reelin' in the Years' concert warms the heart

SPARTA, Mich.-- This year's concert on Saturday, Dec. 7  is sure to be a good one.

Come join your colleagues, students, friends and community members for a night of music and fun. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the performance starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Sparta High School Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time in each school office for $9 until noon Friday. Tickets at the door are $10. 

Fred Thorne will be honored with this year's SEF Recognition Award presented by former Superintendent Mike Weiler.  The ceremony will be followed by a thank you song from music teacher Mollie Friederichs. (Come show your appreciation to Fred.)

Special musical guests include The Bimini Brothers, Valentiger, Jeff Schroeder and the Ridgemateers, Lee McFall, the Paul Owens Band, the SHS Choir and Jazz Band, GRCC Brass Quintet and a very special young guest performer.
