Child dies from apparent bacterial infection

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The Kent County Health Department is working with the County Medical Examiner in the death of a 2-year-old girl Wednesday.

Officials at the Health Department say that the symptoms suffered by the girl and preliminary tests indicate the cause of death may have been a bacterial infection. Final results may not be available for several days. The girl and her family live in the Sparta area.

"Appropriate precautionary control measures have been exercised at this point for the immediate family," said Adam London, Health Officer for Kent County, in a press release. "Based on the preliminary test results, there appears to be no public health threat. People exposed to family members of the child who passed are not considered at risk for contracting the illness."

Health department officials also tell WZZM that the infection is not meningitis, but may be related to a blood infection that was secondary to another infection, like pneumonia.
