My Town: Shop Sparta and meet Santa Nov. 21

SPARTA, Mich.— Sparta will begin celebrating the holiday season with the flip of a switch this weekend.

Santa will light the village’s Christmas tree at 6 p.m. Friday, as part of this year’s Shop Sparta event.  Village merchants will be extending their business hours and offering dales and deals so visitors can get a head start on their holiday shopping.  ChoiceOne Bank will be offering free gift wrapping during the event, which runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.    Community members can sample roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate, snap a photo with Santa’s reindeer and hop aboard a horse drawn trolley for free.  Santa will also be strolling the streets, giving out glow sticks.

Downtown Trinis is normally closed on Mondays but Monday, November 3 from 4pm thru 8pm, Trinis will be open for the Food For Thought fundraiser.

The Sparta Education Foundation invites the public to visit Downtown Trinis located at 148 E. Division in Downtown Sparta for dinner.

Pumpkin Carving & Lit Trail Walk

Family fun is happening at Howard Christian Nature Center located at 16190 Red Pine Drive in Kent City on Saturday, October 25!

All ages are welcome from 5:00pm to 8:30pm, where guest have the opportunity to begin with carving one pumpkin at the Red Pine Center. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place PRIZES will be awarded and from there, all pumpkins will be lit and laid along the trail for all to enjoy. Dressing up in a favorite Nature Character is encouraged.

The trail will cover the spooky Enchanted forest, where a “flying Monkey” could possibly be seen, along with other interesting creatures to observe.

Cost: $8.00 donation per person or $30 donation per family of 4 or more.

Sparta High School Football field located at 465 S. Union Street in Sparta, Michigan comes alive tonight with athletes, cheerleaders, band members and fans. Concessions are available on the grounds. Don’t miss the fun & excitement!

It's time to get out into the fields at Schwallier's Country Basket, located at 1185  9 Mile Rd. NW in Sparta, MI. For additional information call 616-785-9896.

The store has fresh donuts and cider along with other goodies. People can pick apples and pumpkins and there are pets around for kids to enjoy along with the adults. They also have hay rides, so there is something for everyone. What a wonderful time of year!

My Town: Harvest on the Ridge returns Sept. 20

SPARTA, Mich.—  A celebration of West Michigan's agricultural Mecca returns to Sparta this weekend.

Harvest on the Ridge festival will unfold at Rogers Park Sept. 20. This year’s event includes a couch racing fundraiser, the Dirty Apple Obstacle Run, a cupcake baking contest, an apple pie eating contest, hay rides, corn mazes, kids’ activities and a farmers’ market.  Johnny Appleseed is kicking off the event with donkey rides and his tale of how  “The Ridge” became filled with apple orchards.
