SPARTA, Mich.-- Sparta Community Education will begin offering new culinary classes in January 2015.

Sparta resident Chef Mark Kingshott of All In One Chef will lead the six different culinary classes beginning Jan. 13 with a kick-off to a "Healthy and Tasty New Year."

Each class will be held at Sparta High School in room B108, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately two hours.  A hands-on approach will help each person to truly learn by doing the chopping, measuring and cooking throughout the class.  Each participant will be given a recipe packet of everything made the night of the class. The best part? Everyone gets to taste the efforts of their labor.

My Town: Eight pointers reign supreme in second annual Sparta Buck Pole

SPARTA, Mich.--  More than a dozen deer were on display as the Sparta Buck Pole returned to Rogers Hardware this past weekend.

It was an 8 pointer taken down by Tony Smolinski that took the top honor.  Becky Rogers with Rogers Hardware says each deer was judged based on its weight, number of points and the measurement between each antler spread.  Bob Simmons’ 8 point buck took second place; third place went to Dan Rodriguez with his 8 pointer.

This year’s event also featured a doe pole, which Gaetano Vallone won. Randy Lockard and Caleb Mustee placed second and third, respectively.

Rogers says a total of 13 deer were on display during this year’s event, which organizers plan to bring back again next year.
