My Town: Author of “How to Walk to School” addresses need for strong neighborhood schools

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Jacqueline von Edelberg will tell the story of how she and other neighborhood moms galvanized their community to transform a struggling neighborhood school into one of Chicago’s best at an event on Thursday, March 12 at Congress Elementary School.

Von Edelberg co-authored the book “How to Walk to School: Blueprint for a Neighborhood School Renaissance,” which inspired East Hills Loves Congress and the Congress neighborhood/school initiative.

My Town: Become a hero by giving blood during Red Cross Month

My Town: Become a hero by giving blood during Red Cross Month

During Red Cross Month in March, the American Red Cross reminds eligible blood donors that it doesn’t take a cape or super powers to be a hero. By donating blood, donors can become a hero for patients in need.

Red Cross Month is dedicated to the everyday heroes who support the Red Cross mission by giving blood, volunteering their time, learning lifesaving skills or making a financial contribution.

The need for blood is constant. The Red Cross depends on blood donor heroes in communities across the nation to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hospitals nationwide. Donors with all blood types are needed, particularly those with types O negative, A negative and B negative.

To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

My Town Sparta: New Community Education class offers side-by-side cooking lessons with chef

SPARTA, Mich.-- Sparta Community Education will begin offering new culinary classes in January 2015.

Sparta resident Chef Mark Kingshott of All In One Chef will lead the six different culinary classes beginning Jan. 13 with a kick-off to a "Healthy and Tasty New Year."

Each class will be held at Sparta High School in room B108, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will last approximately two hours.  A hands-on approach will help each person to truly learn by doing the chopping, measuring and cooking throughout the class.  Each participant will be given a recipe packet of everything made the night of the class. The best part? Everyone gets to taste the efforts of their labor.
