The cast for the Sparta High School spring play, “West Side Story,” was announced in February.

Excitement is brimming, especially among theatre types, to view the classic musical.

Collin Lewis and Andrea Howes secured the lead parts of “Tony” and “Maria.” The musical is based on William Shakespeare’s tragic romantic play, “Romeo and Juliet,” and features two teenagers from rival New York gangs who fall desperately in love, demonstrating the hardships of the 1950s ethnic struggle.

“I think it will have a profound impact on the audience. That’s my goal,” local drama teacher and director Jane Marolf said.

Marolf, who has directed more than 30 plays in the past 17 years, chose the musical because she wanted something more serious and challenging for the actors. She believes it will be an excellent play as long as the actors commit and challenge themselves.
