One dead in Solon Twp. crash

SOLON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - Kent County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a deadly crash. It happened around 3 a.m. Friday in the 3000 block of Solon NE, that's near Algoma Avenue.

Authorities say a truck was headed westbound when the driver veered off the road.  The truck continued for about a quarter of a mile before hitting several trees.

Deputies say the driver was a man and he was wearing a seat belt.  It's not clear what caused him to lose control.

Investigators would not comment whether speed or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The victim's name and age will be released once family is notified.

Wind knocks tree into Alpine Township house

Alpine Township, Mich. (WZZM)- Rain and wind created some problems Thursday around West Michigan.

A tree fell on a house in the 700 Block of 7 Mile, NE in Alpine Township. It happened around 2:30pm.

Crews on the scene say the tree did break through the house, but it's not clear how bad the damage is.

No one was inside at the time.

Healthy Heart Challenge

The non-profit organization, Faith's Angels, Inc. are challenging all ages of the Sparta community to make heart healthy changes in their lives from October 1 through December 24. The purpose for this challenge is to raise awareness for heart defects, while increasing the quality of life for each participant.

Faith Angels, Inc. hope to have schools, businesses and churches form support-partners for people who enter this health challenge and will provide materials to groups that wish to participate.

The Carlton Hornbrook 2010 Annual Scholarship Golf Outing Fundraiser

The Carlton Hornbrook 2010 Annual Scholarship Golf Outing Fundraiser is scheduled for September 25 at the Rouge Golf Course. This golf outing assists the $750 scholarships given out to Sparta High School, male & female graduates each year.

There will be a 10am shotgun tee-off. Cost is $50 per person. Those interested to golf, sponsor a hole or donate a door prize, can call Dave Hornbrook at (616)299-8020.

Dutch Apple Pie Sale

The Women's Life Chapter 843 of Sparta are selling Fresh "Dutch" Apple Pies available by pre-order for $8.00 by calling the Nazarene Church at (616)887-1169. The fresh made pies can be picked up from 1pm to 6pm on Monday, September 20 at the Nazarene Church in Sparta.

The "Dutch Apple Pies will also be available on Saturday, September 25 at "Harvest on the Ridge". The pies will be frozen and ready to bake or fresh baked for $8 and available by the slice for $2.

The Women's Life Chapter 843 of Sparta is non-profit insurance society, which gives back to the community and will be matching funds up to $500 for the Nazarene Church.
